What is the Family Wellbeing & Resilience Service?

The Family Wellbeing & Resilience service is part of the Families First scheme in Newport. Our role is to support families to build and maintain resilience to mental health difficulties.

We provide low-level mental health support for families within Newport through individual work, group work and family sessions. Support lasts around 10-12 weeks.

Our aim is that families are able to talk more openly about their mental health whilst making positive changes to their emotional and mental wellbeing. We use the Resilience Framework and 5 ways to wellbeing principles within our work.

Who do we support?

We support children and young people aged 0-18 years and their families

We support families or members of a family who are experiencing low to moderate (whether diagnosed or un-diagnosed) mental health problems e.g. anxiety, depression, OCD, body image issues etc.

We also support those who can also be experiencing;

  • low to moderate behavioural problems.
  • issues with family relationships/ communication.
  • difficulties around parenting someone who’s experiencing a mental health problem.

FAQs

Do you have a waiting list?

Our services are in high demand. Waiting lists vary from project to project. We will be in touch on receipt of referral to give you further information on any wait you may experience.

Can I speak to someone for advice before making a referral?

Absolutely! Call us on 01633 258741

I’m a young person - will what we talk about be kept a secret?

Yes, most of what we discuss during support will be kept confidential. The only time we will share information is if:

  • You are at risk or in danger
  • You tell us someone else is at risk or in danger
  • You tell us you’re going to hurt someone
  • You ask us to tell someone

If we do have to share this information, we will do our best to keep you involved in the process and tell you about it first.

I’m a young person - what if I don’t want support?

We ask that the children and young people who are referred are always made aware of the referral and are asked for their consent where appropriate. We are a voluntary service, so that means you can’t be forced to engage with us if you don’t want to.

I'm a young person/ family - what happens if I need extra support/ need to be referred elsewhere?

We can signpost and refer you to other projects within the CYPF team or other local services. We will always talk to you about it before we make a referral.

I’m a parent/carer - I’d like to know what was discussed in my child/young person’s session. Can you tell me?

We will not disclose any information to parent/carers unless there is an identified risk or the young person gives us consent to share. We appreciate this can be distressing, and we always encourage children and young people to discuss things with parent/carers where appropriate. This is dependent on age – please speak to your support worker for further information.

I’m in urgent need of help/ I’m in crisis. Can you help right now?

For multiple reasons we cannot accept referrals for people who are in crisis. If you or someone you know are in crisis, please click here.

I have a question that doesn’t appear on this list – who can I talk to about this?

Please call us on 01633 258741 or email us at [email protected] and we’ll answer any questions you may have.
