FAQs about Counselling

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counselling focuses on a specific issue for a limited amount of time. Therapy can be more long-term and focuses on you as an individual — how you see yourself and the world, your thoughts, and your behaviours, as well as the underlying patterns of why you do the things you do.

What can counselling help with?

Counselling can help you cope with:

a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder

an upsetting physical health condition, such as infertility

a difficult life event, such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress

difficult emotions – for example, low self-esteem or anger

other issues, such as sexual identity

What can I expect from a counselling session?

At your appointment, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained therapist, who’ll listen and support you without judging or criticising.

The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and find your own solutions to problems. But they will not usually give advice or tell you what to do.

How much does counselling cost?

As a charity, we need to charge a small fee to cover the cost of delivering our counselling service. We regularly review our charges and always try to keep the cost of counselling as low as possible, so that as many people as possible can access the service. Our current counselling fees are as follows:

  • £50 per session with a Qualified Counsellor
  • £35 per session with a Student Counsellor

Client Testimonials

I have been attending therapy sessions in Torfaen for a few months now, and I must say that their services have made a significant difference in my life. The staff are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. They provide a safe and welcoming environment, which has allowed me to openly express my concerns.

I didn’t think anyone could help me. You’ve helped me change the way I think and behave for the better. Thank you so much.

For me, counselling was a lifesaver. I never used to talk to anyone. For years, I would keep things bottled up and then cry hysterically on my own as to not inconvenience anyone. I would hide it so I wouldn’t have to confront my thoughts and fears.

I recently sought out mental health support and was fortunate to find Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent Mind. The organisation provides an incredible range of services,  including therapy sessions and workshops, which have been instrumental in my journey towards better mental well-being.
