Our Migrant Service gives friendly, practical help to people from migrant backgrounds who need support to find, set up, and keep their home. We also help you access benefits, health care, education, and more.

What We Can Help You With

We give person-centred support – that means we listen to you, understand your needs, and help in ways that work for you.

Here’s how we can support you:

Housing Help

  • Find and apply for a place to live
  • Fill in housing forms and Home Options
  • Set up your home, including gas, water, and electricity

Money and Benefits

  • Apply for benefits and grants
  • Get help with forms and paperwork
  • Support with budgeting and debts
  • Help to set up payment plans if you’re struggling

Learning and Work

  • Create or improve your CV
  • Help with job applications and training courses
  • Referral to free English language classes (ESOL)

Health and Wellbeing

  • Register with a GP, dentist, or optician
  • Access mental health support or counselling
  • Help applying for school places for your children

Legal and Specialist Support

  • Help you apply for Settled Status
  • Referral to other specialist services for migrants

Who Can Use This Service?

This service is for migrants aged 18 and over who live in Newport and need support with housing.

You may be eligible if you are:

  • A refugee with granted refugee status following application for asylum 
  • An EU citizen with Settled or Pre-Settled Status
  • An EU visa holder who arrived after 31 December 2021
  • A migrant from EEA countries (like Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)

Who Cannot Use This Service?

People who do not have access to public funds cannot use this service. But don’t worry – we’ll try to signpost you to other services that can help.

This service also does not support those in the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS). That scheme helps refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine and is run by the local council.
