Next Steps Programme launched to support migrants, refugees and EU nationals in Newport

Mind in Gwent’s Migrant Service is delighted to launch the Next Steps Programme – a free weekly learning programme designed to help migrants, refugees and EU nationals build confidence and better understand key aspects of living in the UK.

Delivered every Monday from 10am to 12pm at our Newport office, the programme provides practical information and guidance on topics that can make settling into life in the UK easier.

What you’ll learn

Participants will receive support and information on:

  • Housing options – understanding social housing and private renting, applying through Home Options Newport, Local Housing Allowance (LHA), and using websites such as Zoopla, Rightmove and SpareRoom to find accommodation.
  • The UK benefits system – including Universal Credit, eligibility, the six elements of Universal Credit, Housing Benefit and how to use a benefits calculator.
  • Council Tax and utilities – understanding Council Tax bands, discounts and reductions, as well as setting up gas, electricity, water and broadband, reading meters, switching suppliers and saving money on household bills.

To ensure the programme is accessible to as many people as possible, sessions are delivered in multiple languages, including English, Slovak, Arabic, Spanish, Kurdish and Ukrainian.

Whether you’re new to the UK or simply want to gain a better understanding of the systems and services available, the Next Steps Programme offers a welcoming and supportive environment to learn and ask questions.
